Dave and I boarded one of the mighty Argentinian “Cama Executivo” buses at 5pm and the next morning we were in the middle of Patagonia. The double storey bus was equiped with fully reclining seats and we were provided with diner, movies, covers and pillows. What else could you wish for! Puerto Madryn is a middle sized city in Patagonia. The peninsula Valdez lying 100Km away from Puerto Madryn is a very famous world heritage site and whale watching site, but unfortunately from end December to March the whales migrate further south in the Antartic to feed. We rented a car for the day to explore and observe other wild animals around the Peninsula. Our small rental car came with a half tank of gas, and it is only half way down to the Peninsula we realised there might not be another petrol station for the 400 Km ahead we needed to cover that day….oups!… The landscape around Puerto Madryn is very flat, very empty, very unhospitable, with lots of shrub and yellow flowers. All of a sudden you feel a little lonely in the middle of nowhere! Luckyly there was one small station on the peninsula but because of its remoteness we were only allowed to have 50 pesos (USD 25) of petrol, which just gave us enough for the trip and back to Puerto …
