Eco-Scan: White Rhinos
The rhino falls under the category of the big five, a range of wildlife species that form an integral part of tourist visits in many parts of the world. But, it also features prominently in the list of critically endangered species, with just about 4000 black rhinos left in the world. Conservationists warn that if efforts are not stepped up to save the mammal from extinction, then rhinos will soon be wiped off the face of the earth. This week on Ecoscan, we highlight the Kenyan situation and bring you efforts the country is taking to conserve the rhino.
The animals would go “locally” extinct. Anyway; Ben the conservancy idea is great but I still believe that the “big one” the political elites & the “people who matter” are the ones who are really enjoying the benefits of conservation in conservancies. I wonder whether the cash is really reaching the common man? If money is not distributed equitably, how do couples who don’t have school going children benefit in a situation where the cash has been used only to build a school?
Benson, I am so proud to see you on TV. I am happy at the good work you are doing with conservation. In my view, the greatest danger to these rhinos is the Island Biogeography issue – lack of connectedness between our national parks especially with the threat of climate change when species ranges will change remarkably. We also need to involve local communities more. we cannot keep fencing these animals forever, the locals need to live with the animals and enjoy the benefits of conserving them.
